energy efficiency bulbs Ban the BulbI honestly don't agree with the way they want to do it. I have used compact florecents in my house for the last two years. They have saved me more than the bulbs cost and I don't have to replace them that often. Granted you can get 4 incandescents for $1 and only 1 compact florecent for $1 but you will replace those 4 bulbs 2X over before you have to replace the comp. floresant. Just some food for thought, why not have an energy start rebate program like they did with air conditioners a couple of years ago. Turn in all your light bulbs and get a credit towards new compact florecents. | | Saturday, November 19th, 2005 | | 7:48 pm |

What do you know about terrorism in this country?
I know I haven't updated this thing in a while. I was tempted to take on Conyae West's "George Bush doesn't like black people" comment, but alas I let it pass. I will say that its funny that hurricanes are now using the afirmative action policies. Todays topic is terrorism against and this country and its connections. While most people know that 9/11 was done by Al Queida, I will enlighten you on other attacks against the US, by islamic terrorists. What we are facing is a united front of terrorist working in cahoots. When Bush coined the "Axis of Evil" he was right. "Axis of Evil" members are Iraq, Iran, and North Korea. N. Korea is not currently directly involved but might be... 1993: World Trade Center Bombing: Ramzi Yousef and 3 Conspirators. Ramzi Yousef taught at the Al Queida training camps in Afghanistan and recieved funding for the operation from Iraq and Osama Bin Laden. Note: Ramzi Yousef was the guy behind the millenium plot to blow up 12 airliners over the pacific. 6 people were killed. 1995: Oklahoma City Bombing: 168 People Died, Blamed on Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. Note: John Doe #2 was never caught but was identified as a Palestinian with connections to Al Queida. Terry Nichols met with Mohammed Atta in the phillapines. 1996: Dhahran, Saudi Arabia: truck bomb exploded outside Khobar Towers military complex, killing 19 American servicemen and injuring hundreds of others. 13 Saudis and a Lebanese, all alleged members of Islamic militant group Hezbollah. Hezbollah recieves funding from Iran. 1998: The embassy Bombings; Kenya and Niarobi: 258 people dead and more than 5,000 injured. Al Queida operation, Iran now hiding perpertrators. 2000: The Bombing of the USS Cole: 17 sailors were killed and 39 injured. Note: A previous attempt to bomb one of our ships (USS The Sullivans) failed because the suicide bomber boat sank due to the explosive's weight. 2001: Destruction of WTC; attack on Pentagon. Total dead 2,992. 2002: The attack at the EL AL ticket counter: 3 died 4 were injured when an egyption gunman opened fire. 2002: Karachi, Pakistan: bomb exploded outside American consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, killing 12. 2003: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: suicide bombers killed 34, including 8 Americans, at housing compounds for Westerners. 2004: Terrorists entered the U.S. Consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, killing 9. 2005: Oklahoma Football Game Suicide Bomber: 84,000 watched the Sooners play Kansas State, while a suicide bomber was waiting outside. Unfortunately for the terrorist the bomb went off only killing him. The future: 7 N. Korean made nuclear suitcase bombs have been smuggled into our country to be detinated simultaneously. (sounds rediculous doesn't it but its been alluded to in the last Osama tape). What really bugs me is that democrats dig into bush about nonsensical crap when they could get him with the truth. The number of OTM (Other than Mexicans) crossing the mexican border has tripled since 2001, many of them from muslim countries. If Bush is so strong on national defense why is he leaving the back door open. G-d help us all! Interesting Convo with my mom
Ok my mom has given me more evidence that Bill Clinton was a boob. I called her to ask her how she was doing after her surgery (she is doing good, I got my pain tolerance from her). She asked me a question about something that came up this weekend. Did you know that Bill Clinton signed a bill into law that ends lifelong secret service protection for presidents? Any president after him only gets 10 yrs after they release the reins! Many presidents live longer than that. I find this ultra disturbing, presidents even after they retire still retain their security clearance. Bush Sr and Clinton still get daily security briefings. So if this rule was around before Bush Sr. would be unprotected as I write this. What would stop an enemy from kidnapping the ex-presidents and using their "secret" intellegence? Or hold them for ransom? (I wouldn't give a nickel to get Clinton back btw). | | Thursday, August 18th, 2005 | | 6:33 pm |
Theodore Roosevelt -- 1915 One America
All of us, no matter from what land our parents came, no matter in what way we may severally worship our
Creator, must stand shoulder to shoulder in a united America for the elimination of race and religious
prejudice. We must stand for a reign of equal justice to both big and small. We must insist on the maintenance
of the American standard of living. We must stand for an adequate national control which shall secure a better
training of our young men in time of peace, both for the work of peace and for the work of war. We must direct
every national resource, material and spiritual, to the task not of shirking difficulties, but of training
our people to overcome difficulties. Our aim must be, not to make life easy and soft, not to soften soul and
body, but to fit us in virile fashion to do a great work for all mankind. This great work can only be done by a
mighty democracy, with these qualities of soul, guided by those qualities of mind, which will both make it
refuse to do injustice to any other nation, and also enable it to hold its own against aggression by any other
nation. In our relations with the outside world, we must abhor wrongdoing, and disdain to commit it, and we
must no less disdain the baseness of spirit which lamely submits to wrongdoing. Finally and most important of
all, we must strive for the establishment within our own borders of that stern and lofty standard of personal
and public neutrality which shall guarantee to each man his rights, and which shall insist in return upon the
full performance by each man of his duties both to his neighbor and to the great nation whose flag must
symbolize in the future as it has symbolized in the past the highest hopes of all mankind.

Sad day in jewish history and the history continues
Today marks the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av, the date on the lunar calendar on which the First and Second Temples were destroyed. Other more recent tragedies occurred on the same date, such as the outbreak of pogroms against Jews during the First Crusade, the expulsion of Jews from Spain and later from England, and the crushing of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising in Germany. The First Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. 100,000 Jews were killed and the remainder were exiled from their Holy Land for 70 years. The Second Temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. by the Romans, according to traditional sources, because of baseless hatred between Jews. The Jewish people at the time, the Talmud relates, hated one another for no reason. Two million Jews were killed during the destruction, and those remaining were once again exiled. The ninth of Av also marks the Jews' worshipping of the golden calf in the Bible, the false idol that was presented after Moses did not return from Mount Sinai the day many had expected. Hundreds of thousands of Jews were killed on the same date in 135 A.D. when an uprising against Roman oppression, known as the Bar Kochba revolt, failed. A year later, on the same day, the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and attempted to replace it by forming a new city, Aelia Capitolina. In 1290 on the ninth of Av, King Edward I expelled the Jews from England. On that date in 1492, the Jews were expelled from Spain. 50,000 Jews were massacred on the ninth of Av after the failure of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, an attempt by Jews trapped in the Polish capital to organize resistance against Nazi soldiers. For many, the ninth of Av this year is especially poignant. Today marks the beginning of the forced evacuation of the residents of Gaza's Gush Katif slate of Jewish communities and of four communities in Judea and Samaria. | | 6:29 pm |
Gas Prices
I paid almost $50 to fill up my truck this morning!!! GRRRRR!! If these gas prices keep rising im going to have to charge my customers more. I fill up twice a week, when I was driving the chrysler I spent $45 a week...now I'm spending upwards of $100 a week. If gas prices ever come down im gonna hoard gas (My precious ;). lol I plan to build a bomb shelter in the back of my house. No food stuffs or water just pure gas-o-leen! j/k That reminds me of a movie I watched last week Kevin Costner's water world. (Way before Tom Hanks was talking to a volley ball Costner tried to prove one man couldnt hold up a 3 hour movie) I need some "go juice" as Dennis Hopper says in the film. In this terrible film hopper drives around the Exxon Valdeez and preaches the religion of go-juice and cigarettes. He plays the heavy to Costner's self sustaining pee in a coffee maker and get fresh water environmental self. This movie bases itself on the incorrect theory of global warming, in the movie the ice caps are all melted and the earth's landmass is underwater. Even if global warming was true the ice caps wouldn't melt they would expand and we would go into another ice age. So put that aside there is no doubt in my mind that this was a "try to hard" environmental movie kinda like "The day after tomorrow". I believe that "The day after.." will join Waterworld in the $5 Walmart bargain bin where I found Waterworld. (and probably where I should have left it) Current Mood: contemplative | | Friday, August 12th, 2005 | | 12:37 pm |
sex scandel and bill clinton
Actually the sex scandel and bill clinton have nothing to do with each
other. Shocking you say! LOL actually Im gonna post two news stories
that have been attracting my attention this week:
http://phantomjournalist.blogspot.com/
Anyone following the Sandra "Beth" Guisel story should want to see this
page. AKA the CBA sex scandel. (Oh and yeah if i was 17 and she wanted
to have sex with me I would have jumped at the chance :) )
Apparently Bill Clinton knew about Mohammed Atta and 4 of the 9/11
hijackers a year before 9/11. He could have stopped 9/11 three times
IMO. Two times he was offered Osama Bin Laden on a silver platter. Once
from Sudan after we blew up their "asparin" factory (although i dont
think they were making asparin), once from Saudi Arabia when they
wanted to deport him. Clinton didn't take him either due to bad advice
from Janet Reno, or fear of more media exposure. Do you find it stange
that Sandy Berger made some memos dissapear just before the 9/11
inquiry? It seems that Clinton's legal eagles decided that these
terrorists should be left alone. The reasoning was that he was taking
heat from the Waco raid (it wouldnt look good for us to be harrasing
some "innocent" Muslim students) and the information came from the
defense department. Its a shame since everyone in the media hates our
military but the are and have always been our best defense. My Question
is why don't they ask of Clinton what they ask of Bush. What did he
know and when did he know it? Kudos points to Senator Weldon for
letting us know about how our gov't works to protect us. ;)

9/11 Panel Seeks Inquiry
on New Atta Report
WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 - Members of the independent commission that
investigated the Sept. 11 terror attacks called on Congress to
determine whether the Pentagon withheld intelligence information
showing that a secret American military unit had identified Mohammed
Atta and three other hijackers as potential threats more than a year
before the attacks.
The former commission members said the information, if true, could
rewrite an important chapter of the history of the intelligence
failures before Sept. 11, 2001.
"I think this is a big deal," said John F. Lehman, a Republican
member of the commission who was Navy secretary in the Reagan
administration. "The issue is whether there was in fact surveillance
before 9/11 of Atta and, if so, why weren't we told about it? Who made
the decision not to brief the commission's staff or the commissioners?"
Mr. Lehman and other commissioners said that because the panel had
been formally disbanded for a year, the investigation would need to be
taken up by Congress, possibly by the House and Senate Intelligence
Committees.
"If this is true, somebody should be looking into it," said Thomas
H. Kean, the commission chairman and a former Republican governor of
New Jersey.
Detailed accounts about the findings of the secret operation, known
as Able Danger, were offered this week by Representative Curt Weldon,
the Pennsylvania Republican who is vice chairman of the House Armed
Services Committee, and by a former defense intelligence official.
Their comments are the first assertion
by current or former officials that Mr. Atta, an Egyptian who was the
lead hijacker, had been identified as a potential terrorist before the
attacks.
Spokesmen for the commission members said this week that although
the staff was informed by the Pentagon in late 2003 about the existence
of a so-called data-mining operation called Able Danger, the panel was
never told that it had identified Mr. Atta and the others as threats.
In a final report released last summer called the authoritative
history of the attacks, the commission of five Democrats and five
Republicans made no mention of the secret program or the possibility
that a government agency had detected Mr. Atta's terrorist activities
before Sept. 11.
The Pentagon has had no comment on the credibility of the accounts from Mr. Weldon and the intelligence official.
At a news briefing on Tuesday, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld
said he could not comment on reports about Able Danger and suggested
that he knew nothing about such an operation.
"I can't," Mr. Rumsfeld said. "I have no idea. I've never heard of
it until this morning. I understand our folks are trying to look into
it."
A spokesman for the Pentagon, Lt. Col. Christopher Conway, said
later that "there were a number of intelligence operations prior to the
attacks of 9/11" but that "it would be irresponsible for us to provide
details in a way in which those who wish to do us harm would find
beneficial."
An intelligence official said Tuesday that the office of John D.
Negroponte, the director of national intelligence, was "working closely
with the Department of Defense to learn more" about Mr. Weldon's
statements. The official confirmed that the congressman recently met
with Mr. Negroponte, but declined to discuss the subject.
The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Peter Hoekstra,
Republican of Michigan, said in an interview that although he could not
comment on classified subjects, he had recently talked with Mr. Weldon
and that "I do take seriously any issues that may be brought to light
by other members of Congress."
A spokeswoman for Senator Pat Roberts, the Kansas Republican who
heads the Senate Intelligence Committee, said that "the committee is
aware of Congressman Weldon's concerns" and that it "is looking into
it."
Mr. Weldon went public with his information after having talked with
members of the unit in his research for a new book on terrorism. He
said in a telephone interview on Tuesday that he had spoken with three
team members, all still working in the government, including two in the
military, and that they were consistent in asserting that Mr. Atta's
affiliation with a Qaeda terrorism cell in the United States was known
in the Defense Department by mid-2000 and was not acted on.
An outspoken member of Congress on military and intelligence
questions, Mr. Weldon, a champion of military data mining like Able
Danger, has helped arrange interviews for reporters with the former
military intelligence official. The official insisted on anonymity,
saying he did not want to jeopardize political support for future data
mining in the military.
The official said in an interview Monday that the Able Danger team
was created in 1999 under a directive signed by Gen. Henry H. Shelton,
chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to assemble information about Al
Qaeda networks around the world.
He said that by the middle of 2000 the operation had identified Mr.
Atta and three of the other future hijackers as a member of an
American-based cell and that the information was presented that summer
in a chart to the Pentagon's Special Operations Command headquarters in
Tampa, Fla.
The official said that the chart included the names and photographs
of Mr. Atta and the others, Marwan al-Shehhi, Khalid al-Mihdhar and
Nawar al-Hamzi. Mr. Weldon and the intelligence official said Able
Danger members had recommended that the information be shared with the
F.B.I., an the idea that was rejected.
The official said the information was also not shared with the
C.I.A. or other civilian intelligence agencies. "This was a highly
compartmented program with very limited distribution," he said.
General Shelton said Tuesday that he did not recall authorizing the
creation of the unit but that "we had lots of initiatives to find out
where Al Qaeda was."
The former intelligence official said he was among a group that
briefed the former staff director of the Sept. 11 panel, Philip D.
Zelikow, and at least three other staff members about Able Danger when
the staff members visited the Afghanistan-Pakistan region in October
2003. The official said that he had explicitly mentioned Mr. Atta in
the briefing as a member of the American terrorist cell.
Mr. Kean, the commission head, said the staff members were confident
that Mr. Atta's name was not mentioned in the briefing or subsequent
documents from the Pentagon.
"None of them recalls mention of the name Atta," he said. "I think
if that had been mentioned, it would have been on the tips of their
tongue."
Mr. Kean said he had asked the staff members to retrieve their
classified notes from government storage to be certain about not
overlooking any reference to Mr. Atta or to an American-based cell in
any of the Pentagon material.
A State Department spokesman for Mr. Zelikow, who joined the department this year, had no immediate comment.

Israel & Politics http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4134118.stmSo Israel is going through with their gaza pullout. I have a few questions; 1) Since when is it right for the winner of a war to give up their spoils? I guess its ok when you are a persecuted people. 2) How is palestine supposed to be a country if it is separated by israel? How will the west bank be able to control gaza? How is Israel going to give them fly over rights, especially after 9/11? 3) Why are they turning jews against jews? Wasn't sharon supposed to be our boy and not fold under international pressure? They said make the desert into a garden, these settlers did that, now you're going to kick them out? All I can say is BULLSHIT! Whats the odds that within six months israel is going to have to go back in, to fix the chaos that ensues. If it was up to me I'd send in 2000 school buses and load up the palestinians and drive their asses to jordan! Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt should have taken in the palestinians since they are fellow muslims, and speak the same language. I still don't understand the muslim people, Why haven't any imams (or whatever their priests are called) come out against terrorism, and finger terrorists. Do you believe that the imam in buffalo didn't know that those six young men were just a "little extreme" in their beliefs? It seems that the muslims do not have a fraternal community system like the western world. How much did muslim countries give to muslim countries, like sumatra and polynesia, when they got hit with the tsunami? Why did we infidels give so much and their brothers give so little? Even Israel offered support! Now on to American politics, how can so many people be miss informed and be so nieve? When I look at world and US politics, I look at it from a historical perspective. "Those who ignore history are bound to repeat it". Unfortunately most of my friends don't have the history education that I have. It makes sense to me now why we have the electoral college. People are sheep, they will believe whatever is most ridiculous. Show them something shiny, make a slick "documentary" and people will believe that there was no history behind our invading Iraq. Does anybody know what we were spending to contain Saddam? This isnt a rhetorical question. I really want to know what it cost to enforce the north and south no fly zones, and what it cost to run the bombing operation in 1998. I do know what it cost in soldiers lives, 77 marines in the barrack bombing in Kuwait, and numerous sailors on the USS Cole. Osama's biggest complaint is that we were staying in the middle east. Would we have had to stay in the middle east if we didn't need to contain saddam? | | Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005 | | 2:27 pm |
economics and people questions?
I have been thinking about the flow of money recently. When I spend 5 dollars where does it go? How many hands does it go through before it ends up back to me? I am not talking about the paper greenbacks since money is now theoretical. Credit cards and checks magically transfer money from one person to another without actual money changing hands. Is there actually real money that is transfered or is it just a number in a computer somewhere? I know they used to have a basement in NYC where they stored gold and transfered it between the countries, but since we are not on the gold standard, does that room still exist? Recently I lost a friend. He was no longer the same person he was. I understand that people change, usually its for the better, but in his case it was for the worse. I believe the change in his personality was due to his girlfriend. He became sneaky, his self-confidence was diminished. His family raised him for 20 years to be an upstanding man, it took her less than 2 years to reverse that. It saddens me to see his decline as a person. Email from my mom
I figured that it would be easier to post it here then email it to all of you (especially since I don't know everybodies email. The author is unknown. All I could say after reading it is; amen! TWO LISTS: *WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT TO TURN ON THE TV AND HEAR ANY U.S. PRESIDENT, DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN GIVE THE FOLLOWING SPEECH? *My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of Iraq regime has been completed. Since congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is complete. This morning I gave the order for a complete removal of all American forces from Iraq. This action will be complete within 30 days. It is now to begin the reckoning. Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short. The United Kingdom, Spain, Bulgaria, Australia, and Poland are some of the countries listed there. The other list contains everyone not on the first list. Most of the world's nations are on that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening. Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war. The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell-holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption. Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France. In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing social problems we still have at home. On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Screw with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth. Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France, or maybe China. I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France, Germany, and Russia. Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bon chance, mes amis. I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded and crushed. I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York. A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List 2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each other, you folks might want to try not pissing us off for a change. Mexico is also on List 2. President Fox and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple extra tank and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put em? Yep, border security. So start doing something with your oil. Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA treaty - starting now. We are tired of the one-way highway. Immediately, we'll be drilling for oil in Alaska - which will take care of this country's oil needs for decades to come. If you're an environmentalist who opposes this decision, I refer you to List 2 above: pick a country and move there. They care. It is time for America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, "darn tootin." Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America. It is time to eliminate homelessness in America. It is time to eliminate World Cup Soccer from America. To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thanks guys. We owe you and we won't forget. To the nations on List 2, a final thought: You might want to learn to speak Arabic. God bless America. Thank you and good night. *If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading it in English, thank a soldier. Current Mood: amused | | Saturday, July 30th, 2005 | | 12:18 pm |

It is 2021, tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of 9/11. America is under oppression by ultra-liberal extremists which have yielded governing authority to the United Nations. HOLY HORNEY BATMAN
Ok I spent the weekend at RI house...which meant that I went to the beach. Yes my white ass is now a mixture of red and tan. But the real problem I had was seeing all those women in bikinis. Whoever invented that type of bathing suit, I salute you. At least the crystal clear blue-green sea water was cold ;). The only drawback to the bikini is pregnant chicks think they still look good in them. (or maybe she just looked pregnant) Greg was with me this weekend, on the car ride home he told me of a banana hammock he saw on one of his jogs. Why do men think that a thong looks good on them? I know that if you are european its the norm, but come on now wearing your girlfriend's undies to the beach is just messed up. Seriously I have a decent sized package, but I dont feel the need to let it be supported buy some speghetti straps. (plus my gut would probably hang out) Apparently this guy was wearing his year round sweater also... so I guess he thought he was a manly man. Get some shorts bud! Talking about year round sweaters, my grandfather used to tell me that certain foods and drinks would put hair on my chest. Wierd since I ate those foods and I only have a little patch on my chest and pleasure trail. I'm glad I'm not monkey hairy cause I'd have to shave it off or start climbing trees to get bananas. ;) | | Friday, July 22nd, 2005 | | 4:11 pm |

Proof that Jews are smarter!
So there is finnally a paper based upon my theory that jewish persicution made us smarter and stronger! Of course they make it look like these guys are kooks, but of his stuff that i've read he thinks outside the box and comes up with astounding revelations. The high intelligence of Ashkenazi Jews may be a result of their persecuted past THE idea that some ethnic groups may, on average, be more intelligent than others is one of those hypotheses that dare not speak its name. But Gregory Cochran, a noted scientific iconoclast, is prepared to say it anyway. He is that rare bird, a scientist who works independently of any institution. He helped popularise the idea that some diseases not previously thought to have a bacterial cause were actually infections, which ruffled many scientific feathers when it was first suggested. And more controversially still, he has suggested that homosexuality is caused by an infection. Even he, however, might tremble at the thought of what he is about to do. Together with Jason Hardy and Henry Harpending, of the University of Utah, he is publishing, in a forthcoming edition of the Journal of Biosocial Science, a paper which not only suggests that one group of humanity is more intelligent than the others, but explains the process that has brought this about. The group in question are Ashkenazi Jews. The process is natural selection. Cambridge University Press has details about the Journal of Biosocial Science. Advertisment Ashkenazim generally do well in IQ tests, scoring 12-15 points above the mean value of 100, and have contributed disproportionately to the intellectual and cultural life of the West, as the careers of Freud, Einstein and Mahler, pictured above, affirm. They also suffer more often than most people from a number of nasty genetic diseases, such as Tay-Sachs and breast cancer. These facts, however, have previously been thought unrelated. The former has been put down to social effects, such as a strong tradition of valuing education. The latter was seen as a consequence of genetic isolation. Even now, Ashkenazim tend to marry among themselves. In the past they did so almost exclusively. Dr Cochran, however, suspects that the intelligence and the diseases are intimately linked. His argument is that the unusual history of the Ashkenazim has subjected them to unique evolutionary pressures that have resulted in this paradoxical state of affairs. Ashkenazi history begins with the Jewish rebellion against Roman rule in the first century AD. When this was crushed, Jewish refugees fled in all directions. The descendants of those who fled to Europe became known as Ashkenazim. In the Middle Ages, European Jews were subjected to legal discrimination, one effect of which was to drive them into money-related professions such as banking and tax farming which were often disdained by, or forbidden to, Christians. This, along with the low level of intermarriage with their gentile neighbours (which modern genetic analysis confirms was the case), is Dr Cochran's starting point. He argues that the professions occupied by European Jews were all ones that put a premium on intelligence. Of course, it is hard to prove that this intelligence premium existed in the Middle Ages, but it is certainly true that it exists in the modern versions of those occupations. Several studies have shown that intelligence, as measured by IQ tests, is highly correlated with income in jobs such as banking. What can, however, be shown from the historical records is that European Jews at the top of their professions in the Middle Ages raised more children to adulthood than those at the bottom. Of course, that was true of successful gentiles as well. But in the Middle Ages, success in Christian society tended to be violently aristocratic (warfare and land), rather than peacefully meritocratic (banking and trade). Put these two things together—a correlation of intelligence and success, and a correlation of success and fecundity—and you have circumstances that favour the spread of genes that enhance intelligence. The questions are, do such genes exist, and what are they if they do? Dr Cochran thinks they do exist, and that they are exactly the genes that cause the inherited diseases which afflict Ashkenazi society. That small, reproductively isolated groups of people are susceptible to genetic disease is well known. Constant mating with even distant relatives reduces genetic diversity, and some disease genes will thus, randomly, become more common. But the very randomness of this process means there should be no discernible pattern about which disease genes increase in frequency. In the case of Ashkenazim, Dr Cochran argues, this is not the case. Most of the dozen or so disease genes that are common in them belong to one of two types: they are involved either in the storage in nerve cells of special fats called sphingolipids, which form part of the insulating outer sheaths that allow nerve cells to transmit electrical signals, or in DNA repair. The former genes cause neurological diseases, such as Tay-Sachs, Gaucher's and Niemann-Pick. The latter cause cancer. That does not look random. And what is even less random is that in several cases the genes for particular diseases come in different varieties, each the result of an independent original mutation. This really does suggest the mutated genes are being preserved by natural selection. But it does not answer the question of how evolution can favour genetic diseases. However, in certain circumstances, evolution can. West Africans, and people of West African descent, are susceptible to a disease called sickle-cell anaemia that is virtually unknown elsewhere. The anaemia develops in those whose red blood cells contain a particular type of haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen. But the disease occurs only in those who have two copies of the gene for the disease-causing haemoglobin (one copy from each parent). Those who have only one copy have no symptoms. They are, however, protected against malaria, one of the biggest killers in that part of the world. Thus, the theory goes, the pressure to keep the sickle-cell gene in the population because of its malaria-protective effects balances the pressure to drive it out because of its anaemia-causing effects. It therefore persists without becoming ubiquitous. Dr Cochran argues that something similar happened to the Ashkenazim. Genes that promote intelligence in an individual when present as a single copy create disease when present as a double copy. His thesis is not as strong as the sickle-cell/malaria theory, because he has not proved that any of his disease genes do actually affect intelligence. But the area of operation of some of them suggests that they might. The sphingolipid-storage diseases, Tay-Sachs, Gaucher's and Niemann-Pick, all involve extra growth and branching of the protuberances that connect nerve cells together. Too much of this (as caused in those with double copies) is clearly pathological. But it may be that those with single copies experience a more limited, but still enhanced, protuberance growth. That would yield better linkage between brain cells, and might thus lead to increased intelligence. Indeed, in the case of Gaucher's disease, the only one of the three in which people routinely live to adulthood, there is evidence that those with full symptoms are more intelligent than the average. An Israeli clinic devoted to treating people with Gaucher's has vastly more engineers, scientists, accountants and lawyers on its books than would be expected by chance. Why a failure of the DNA-repair system should boost intelligence is unclear—and is, perhaps, the weakest part of the thesis, although evidence is emerging that one of the genes in question is involved in regulating the early growth of the brain. But the thesis also has a strong point: it makes a clear and testable prediction. This is that people with a single copy of the gene for Tay-Sachs, or that for Gaucher's, or that for Niemann-Pick should be more intelligent than average. Dr Cochran and his colleagues predict they will be so by about five IQ points. If that turns out to be the case, it will strengthen the idea that, albeit unwillingly, Ashkenazi Jews have been part of an accidental experiment in eugenics. It has brought them some advantages. But, like the deliberate eugenics experiments of the 20th century, it has also exacted a terrible price. customers & service
Today I got yelled at by a customer because they never told me that I needed to set up a computer. I am not a fucking mind reader! Hold on let me break out my weegie board I'll channel the dead so they can tell me when you need computer service. I have gotten complaints before from this customer, I believe the contact person at the company is trying to fuck with me on purpose. Probably cause I told her I voted for Bush last year, I can't believe how many people are still bitter. hmm people get over it, he won fair and square. On that note Until the democrats go back to the way they were during the kennedy years (john and robert), they wont get my vote. Strong on defense, conservative tax theory, no excessive spending, no whine factor. If JFK and RFK were alive they would kick teddy's ass for his anti-american, and anti-military comments. Lest we forget JFK stood at the berlin wall, juggled the cuban missle crisis, and started vietnam. Just cause I'm jewish doesn't mean I'm gonna put a "D" next to my name. Call me a traitor if you want, but I couldn't vote for a man who once said that America gave too much support for Israel, and the fence to keep terrorists out is a bad idea. On that note do you think that the most technically advanced nation in the world could afford to put up a fence and defend our borders! One day I should write out my political platform if I was running for president. But until then....he he he he he he.... OK SO NOW I HAVE A BLOG
I always thought it was silly to write one of these things....but today i needed to vent so I'm starting one. I will discuss whats on my mind, whats in the news or what ever....if I offend you just stop reading. Today: I am tired of having debates with people that can not offer a logical explaination or just try to change the point of the argument by shifting the focus. Just because its your feeling or opinion doesn't mean its fact. If I ask a direct question it doesn't mean that I am insulting you it means I want an answer! Current Mood: aggravated |
